HYDE BAY HOME LETTER

VOLUME 27             April 27, 1953                   Precamp Number 2.

EXPLANATION. The time has come to write you again. I want you to know how the camp for 1953 is progressing. Please go over the following lists and let me know any mistakes. My records may be wrong. Mail may have been lost.

NUMBERS. We have 80 campers enrolled. Of these, 19 may stay but the first four weeks, although the majority of those so enrolled in past years have elected to stay the full time. There are ten on the list where some uncertainty seems to exist. Our supposed limit is 85. Last year we went to 89 to start. I can take 90 boys this year if I have to. Beyond that figure, I do not see how we can go. The dining hall can not be further expanded. I have neither the tent locations nor the tents for more boys. Our council is set for that maximum. We have been successful with that number. We do not want to be a large camp.

OLD CAMPERS DEFINITELY ENROLLED. J. Alexander, Backes, G. Barker, Bordley, Bob Bristor, E. Brown, Classen, Coupe, B. Jones, C. McManus, P. McManus, W. McManus, J. McQuilkin, W. McQuilkin, Mercer, J. Merrick, S. Merrick, Mithoefer, Murphy, Navas, Peet, Pickett, Pine, Moss, Rozendaal, Schwartz, Schweizer, Trigg, Webb,
Winne, Hills. Old campers but not with us in 1952: Bolognino, Donahoe, and McEwen. For the last four weeks, Freeman, Hawks, and Lewis.

OLD BUT NOT SO DEFINITE. The parents of these boys have said they “hoped” or please “hold a place”. I must now ask them to be more definite. Bill Bristor, Boyce, J. Brown, Butterfield, The Cochrans, Heckel, Karplus, Long, Lyons, Winkenwerder.

DEFINITE NEW BOYS. Ansley, Bowyer, Burnham, B. Damon, K. Damon, Dickey, S. Donahoe, Doyle, Erdle, Fallon, Holmes, Jenifer, Johnson, G. Jones, Legg, E. Malm, M. Malm, R. Malm, McCoy, D. McManus, Martin, Pleger, Alex, Smith, Strakosh, B. Stuart, C. Stuart, Saulsbury, Swett, Winter, D. Wright, F. Wright, J. Wright.
Second Half: Gallagher, Gow, Griepenkerl, Stifler, Weld.

OLD BOYS NOT RETURNING. Banker, R. Donahoe, Howell, R. Moore, H. Moore, Muller, Omberg, Ramsay, Schafer, M. Smith, P. Smith, VanWoert, J., Ri. and Ro. Zeller.

OLD BOYS WHO HAVE NOT BEEN HEARD FROM. Cards were not received from the following: C. B. Alexander, R. and W. Barker, Bilodeau, Boone, Boyd, Briscoe, Calt, G. and J. Cock, Dame, Griffiths, Guy, Holmes, Howard, Johnston, LeFevre, Maslin, Mason, McBride, Michell, Peters, Andy Smith, Schmidt, F. and G, Konta, Sargent, Spofford, Turner and Womble.

UNANSWERED INQUIRIES. The following were sent camp literature with no reply so far. Some made inquiry. Others were suggested by parents of old campers. I sent off a letter and literature as soon as you wrote me. J. Hawks, Whyte, Volkman, Ely, Montesano, Jenkins, Moress, Firma, Longly, Carter, Rankin, Deford, Dutcher, Godine, Lanahan, Olin, Roby, de Russy, Saltonstall, Palmer.

NECESSITY DICTATES. Inquiries and registrations are still coming in. I want to give preference to old campers and their friends. Last year at this time we had about 50 signed. It is obvious that we are going to fill up fast. Please let me hear from you very soon. We will have even fewer places by the time this is mimeoed and mailed.

PERSONAL LETTERS. I had hoped to write personal letters to all. I have done so to those who returned cards. I have not had the time to write others. I had fully planned to do so. It is not the true measure of my eagerness to have you back with us. You really have kept me busy.

SHORT TIME CAMPERS. I have always tried to take boys for short and irregular periods to help with vacation plans. I can not take more for the first half. In theory there are eleven more for the first half than for the second so far. I can take more for the second half. In fact, there probably will be more chance to get in for the second half than for full time.

SCHOLARSHIPS. Our “prosperity” will make no difference in our program of granting scholarship aid where it is needed. Our grant from the local foundation is increased fifty per cent for this year. We can do more than last year in this field.

TRAVEL DIRECTIONS. Every year parents get anxious about travel directions. It is quite natural. You will get full instructions as soon as I can get plans from the railroads. I have to wait for their definite decisions. You can be fairly sure of this schedule. Bob Pickett will bring the group up from Washington. They will start at about 7 A.M. Baltimore about 7—45. Leave New York and the Grand Central Station at about noon. They arrive at Fort Plain around five and are in camp by suppertime. All this on Tuesday, June 30th. Boys who come by car may arrive any time that day.

STAFF. George Chandlee will again be head councilor. Bob and Betty Pickett, Assistant Director and Nurse. Messrs: Barriskill, Dresser1 Mercer, and Russell will constitute the faculty under Mr. Russell’s direction. Old councilors returning are Carey, Garver, Jencks, Kerr, Offutt, and Pratt. Heb Evans is back after two years in the army. Leslie Manning will probably be with us although definite word has not come. Steve Bullock is still indefinite. Bowdoin and Powell have become junior councilors. Basil Wright of Oilman School, an exchange teacher from England, will coach tennis and have a tent. Dick Fryberger, after many years at camp, will be a sailing councilor. King and Gorter have Gilman and Princeton backgrounds. Pete Morrison is heavyweight on Bob’s Harvard wrestling team. Riding councilor is not yet settled. We need three or four more junior councilors. Nominations will gladly be considered. Henry and Johnson will again be in the kitchen.
